APA | DC - Gordon Parks: Camera Portraits - Private Exhibition Tour!

  • American Photographic Artists: Washington, D.C. (map)

We are thrilled to announce a private tour of the Gordon Parks: Camera Portraits from the Corcoran Collection exhibition at National Gallery of Art on Tuesday, August 20th at 2pm.  This private event is for DC members of APA only.

This private tour is with the exhibition curator Sarah Greenough and begins promptly at 2pm.

Registration is required and membership will be confirmed.
Registration opens on August 1st.
Limited capacity.

About the exhibition:
Gordon Parks
: Camera Portraits looks at a celebrated American photographer and how he forged a new mode of portraiture after World War II. Parks blended a documentary photographer’s desire to place his subjects where they lived and worked with a studio photographer’s attention to dress, character, and expression. In doing so, he believed he could create portraits of individuals that addressed their cultural significance. He applied this approach to such American icons as boxer Muhammad Ali and conductor Leonard Bernstein, as well as to a Harlem gang leader and to a Detroit couple, revealing the humanity and cultural dignity of each person.

This exhibition, drawn primarily from the Corcoran Collection, presents some 25 portraits Parks made between 1941 and 1970. Explore Parks's innovations in portraiture through some of his best-known photographs. Learn how his portraits speak to larger stories of the civil rights movement, the African American experience, and American culture.

  • American Photographic Artists: Washington, D.C. (map)

Join APA|DC on Tuesday, July 16th at 12pm EST on Zoom for Registering Your Copyright with photographer Steve Buchanan. Steve will briefly introduce what copyright is, who owns it, and why it's necessary to register your copyright. Then Steve will guide guests through a step-by-step introduction on how to register your copyright. A short Q&A to follow the walkthrough.

About Steve:
Steve’s been interested in photography since he was 14. While working at 7-Eleven stocking shelves, he spotted the label on the back of a roll of Kodak film which read, “Take this film to your Kodak processor or develop it yourself using Kodak chemistry.” Immediately he thought, “You mean you can do that?” And he was hooked. In the years since, he’s photographed everything from mummies to machine guns. He’s shot in lots of places he’s fond of, a few he’d like to forget (the blast freezer comes to mind), and all the while finding new ways to capture the beauty of the world.

Steve lives on Maryland's Eastern Shore with his family and a scruffy Jack Russell.

  • American Photographic Artists: Washington, D.C. (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join APA|DC on Tuesday, June 25th at 12pm EST on Zoom for 30 Minutes with Hair and Makeup Artist Connie Tsang! Connie will discuss how a HMUA can work along with other members of your team so that the whole is great than the sum of its parts, and bust some myths about HMU along the way. She'll be open to discussion and Q&As to help us walk away with concrete tips we can all use.

About Connie:
Connie Tsang is a DC-based hair and makeup artist (HMUA) with 16 years of experience in commercial photo and video productions She specializes in using makeup and hair styling to help tell a story on camera. Her work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, and ELLE. Her clients include AARP, Apple, Amazon, Capital One, Neiman Marcus, NPR, PBS, and the Ritz-Carlton.

Before becoming an HMUA, Ms. Tsang was a portrait artist. She discovered the magic of makeup by chance after running out of pigments for the cheek. She then instinctively grabbed a blush compact from the drawer and used the enclosed brush to buff the peachy powder onto the paper. The result was so realistic that she decided to try it on real people!

Over the years, Ms. Tsang has worked with brands big and small and people from all walks of life. Working long hours in the portrait studio gave her meticulous eyes. Later, working on set of national live TV made her hands nimble.

While the makeup brush is no magic wand, she aims to create magical moments for the photographers and DPs she works with by bringing out the best of those in her chair.

Applications open June 1st!

APA | DC is pleased to present the annual LGBTQIAP+ Photography Grant for emerging and established photographers who self-identify as LGBTQIAP+. This grant seeks to provide a much-needed financial contribution to photographers struggling to secure funding to complete their projects.

Our goal is to celebrate the LGBTQIAP+ experience through photography. We hope to champion storytellers and bring visibility to the LGBTQIAP+ community’s national platform and cultivate a safe space for funding, recognition, and representation in our professional photographic community. The APA | DC LGBTQIAP+ Photography Grant is open to photographers residing within the United States and its territories and can support new or in-progress projects. It will be awarded based on the strength of visual portfolios and submitted artist statements.

Submissions for documentary, narrative, experimental, or episodic projects representing LGBTQIAP+ people and their communities are encouraged. This grant is intended to support camera-based photography projects, and not those produced solely through the use of AI.

We encourage applications by people of color, transgender people, intersex people, asexual people, non-binary people, disabled people, women, and other underrepresented people and communities within the queer (or LGBTQIAP+) community.

For over thirty years, Anice Hoachlander’s architectural photography has been recognized for its success in bringing to life some of the region’s most eminent residential and commercial structures. Her work has helped clients achieve recognition from more than 450 regional and national design awards. Backed by knowledge of and passion for architecture and design, Anice’s work balances art and composition, utilizing technical expertise to elevate creative impact.

Published images can be found in a variety of print and digital magazines, including ArchitectureDC, ArchDaily, Architectural Record, Architizer, Atomic Ranch, Bethesda Magazine, Custom Home, Residential Architect, Home & Design, Interior Design, LUXE, Southern Homes and Washingtonian.

Communicating architecture through a two-dimensional medium is what keeps Anice captivated with the architectural photography process. She approaches each assignment differently, allowing the site, design, and materials of a building dictate how the images are created. Sheconsiders her photographs successful if the viewer experiences a communication of subject and place in a way that transcends the photographic medium itself.

Anice is also active in the design and photography communities. She is an affiliate member of the American Institute of Architects and supports the National Building Museum. Currently, she serves on the steering committee for the Capital Area Custom Residential Architect’s Network (CRAN) and is an active member of both APA and ASMP. Also recognized as an informative and entertaining speaker, Anice has produced numerous photography seminars for national AIA conventions and local workshops at the District Architecture Center.

APA | DC Presents: 30 Minutes with Noah Willman

  • American Photographic Artists: Washington, D.C. (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join APA | DC as we spend 30 Minutes with portraiture photographer Noah Willman on Tuesday, February 13th at 12pm ET. Noah plans to share a personal project about blind hockey - documenting clubs throughout the East Coast, a three-day Team USA vs. Team Canada tournament in Toronto, and the players' lives outside the sport. All of the players are legally blind, and besides minor differences (like using a metal puck filled with ball bearings that can be tracked by sound or making the net one foot smaller to accommodate the fully blind goalies), they play hockey that can be hard to distinguish from the sighted version of the sport.

This virtual event is free to all APA Members, Future APA Members and Students.

About Noah:
Noah Willman is a photographer based in Washington, DC specializing in portraiture. His work often involves photographing athletes, politicians, and business leaders for editorial and commercial clients including Fortune Magazine, Runner’s World, and Discovery. After moving to DC from his hometown of Madison, WI in 2015 he started his first long-term personal project on the Washington Cricket League, which was later featured by Washingtonian. Throughout the years, Noah has used personal projects as a platform to create the work he is excited about, without the influence of a client. These projects have often directly led to editorial features and commissions.
